Concert For George - Ringo Starr, Jeff Lynne, Eric Clapton, Dhani Harrison, Paul McCartney and more
A year after George Harrison passed away in 2001 his widow Olivia and old friend Eric Clapton organized a gathering of Harrison’s friends together at London’s Royal Albert Hall for a one off concert to celebrate his life and music. On November 29, 2002, the Concert For George celebrated the music of Harrison and the long lasting friendships he made around the music business.
While Eric Clapton oversaw the evening’s proceedings as Musical Director, Harrison’s longtime friend and collaborator, Jeff Lynne, produced the audio elements of the concert. Lynne produced Harrison’s 1987 album Cloud 9 and was a member with Harrison, Tom Petty, Roy Orbison and Bob Dylan in the Traveling Wilburys. The film, directed by David Leland (whose credits include the feature Wish You Were Here, HBO’s Band Of Brothers and the Traveling Wilburys video “Handle With Care”), captures beautiful performances of Harrison’s music along with some of the music he loved by some of the people who knew him best.

Certified 8 times platinum by the RIAA since its initial release as a 2 DVD set in November 2003, Concert For George earned a 2004 Grammy® Award for Best Long Form Music Video. The 2-disc Blu-ray edition includes the complete concert on the first disc, with a second disc containing the original theatrical version featuring concert highlights, interviews with the performers, rehearsals, and behind-the-scenes footage. The second disc also includes a previously unreleased interview segment entitled “Drummers,” featuring Ringo Starr, Jim Keltner and Ray Cooper.

Concert For George - Ravi Shankar giving invocation
Reminicent of the Concert for Bangladesh performed at Madison Square Garden 30 years before, the Concert For George begins with Harrison’s good friend and mentor Ravi Shankar sharing a dedication and prayer. After some Indian music and a comedy interlude by member of Monty Python (Eric Idle, Terry Jones, Terry Gilliam and Michael Palin along with Neil Innes, Tom Hanks, and Carol Cleveland) to begin the show, the evening continued as many of Harrison’s good friends and colleagues honored their friend by playing his music. The band featured former Beatles Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Jeff Lynne, Billy Preston, and Harrison’s son Dhani and many more who played on Harrison’s albums over the years.

Roger McGuinn of the Byrds
Roger McGuinn.
That would be JIM McGuinn, then of the Beefeaters, also containing members David Crosby & Gene Clark who would form the Byrds with Chris Hillman & Michael Clarke. Years later, as an adherent to the Sudbud religious cult, Jim and his wife would both change their names to their TRUE names. He became ROGER McGuinn at that time.
McGuinn had also been an accompanist for Bobby Darin, Judy Collins and The Chad Mitchell Trio. He actually can be seen in the background on one of their Kapp LP covers.
He had already been using the 12 String (plus 6 String and banjo) as part of his back-up work behind Collins and Chad Mitchell. Crosby also played a 12 String and that pretty much cemented their sound.
